like a giddy astro-boy in the payload bay of the space shuttle Endeavour.

I last saw her in her glory days, for the launch of STS-118.

  1. In the photo above, I am facing the Airlock to Middeck

The windows on top peer into the flight deck with the astronauts control panels.

Now looking down on that airlock assembly, with upper hatch (view from inside):

And, as if it could not get any better, I got to take an EVA of sorts… Here are photos and link to video overview.

  2. very very special 🙂

  3. What an honor to do that – thanks again for sharing!

  4. That’s worth being giddy over ;-0

  5. The scale of the shuttle is amazing…..to think all that weight goes up to space and back…amazing.

  6. If the shuttle were on the pad like that, then in the top photo, I would be looking straight up, and standing in the middle of the payload bay (the big rectangular area under the payload doors facing us in the night shot). Then gravity would kick in, and I would fall down onto the wall with the flag. =)

  7. It becomes an Ender’s Game room.

Meanwhile, I just posted a video of us taking a EVA video from the crane. =)

  8. Love this photos Steve. I would almost say that, it must be a picture of you in the old cradle you came on Earth with O=)

Now you just need your mining tool and you are up and running for Asteroid exploration… ; )

  9. heh, are you saying your buddy is a tool?

Meanwhile, EveryScape has finished the stitching of my fisheye shots into a virtual tour. Before you start, remember to click the full screen button in the bottom right corner of the main image. Then you can click on the image and drag to look up down and all around. When you see an orange arrow, you can zoom to the neighboring room. OK here is the VR tour of Endeavour, starting with this Payload Bay.

And here’s a flickr post showing what the input images looked like for the flight deck and links to the other areas.
