I’m partial to the AC induction motor. =)
It’s quite remarkable how many of his inventions have proven to be the most efficient technologies of the day, from AC power systems and polyphase transmission lines, to RF lighting, to the AC induction motor in the Tesla car. He is now recognized as the inventor of radio, not Marconi, one of his many competitors.
Edison was so competitive with Tesla (partnered with Westinghouse at the time) that he arranged for the electric chair to use AC power for electrocutions, conveying the marketing message that AC is lethal (versus the DC power systems that Edison sold). Edison’s lab “Westinghoused” 24 dogs purchased from local children for 25 cents apiece before moving to a human criminal.
On his deathbed, Edison volunteered that his biggest mistake was trying to develop DC instead of the vastly superior AC system that his former employee, Nikola Tesla, had put within his grasp.
Brilliant, i have heard rumors that he had developed some incredible energy source which could save our main problems and this was kept as one of the greatest secrets of our time.. wonder, if it is a only a rumor… a person who has mentioned it is not an engineer and one of my classmates, was a strange coincidence that he started talking about Tesla recently out of the blue and since he is one of this people who is more intuitive than others, i keep wondering… XX to Tesla:):)
He spent most of his final years in an attempt to finance and build Wardenclyffe. It was quite controversial, and people today are still trying to reconcile whether he had lost it, or discovered something brilliant.
"Larry Page, Google’s co-founder, sees the creator’s life as a cautionary tale. ‘It’s a sad, sad story. The inventor “couldn’t commercialize anything. He could barely fund his own research.’” (from a recent NYT update)
Calling all superheroes… from Musk to Ironman…. =)
P.S. Tempest’s Tesla talk just went online at TED too.
Tesla was incredible…strangely but with all faults soviet union had…we grew up in the society where science was cool… It was a very basic assumption in my family:) questioning it is kinda questioning that the earth is round for me… the only thing that western science of mind and body might benefit from some oriental approaches…we all have blind spots..and world needs tesla’s brilliance.
