Each year, around TED time, the apricot trees and wild mustard bloom in a fractal explosion of color.

So I had to take a hike through them today.

Apricot orchards like this used to canvas the landscape before the silicon came to Silicon Valley.
These particular ones surround David Packard’s home.

I had lunch with Bill and Dave on my first day of work at HP.
Gestures like that leave a lasting impression.

  2. I bet it left an impression – two of America’s greatest. Nice pic too.

  3. Yeah…. and a great institution enshrining them eponymously in symbolic immortality.

The Packard Estate maintains this organic time capsule. Dave’s study looks out over Silicon Valley, as you can see below with San Jose in the distance.

Everything in it is exactly as he left it when he passed in 1996…. the books he was reading and appointments about the place.

This perspective may be a bit unique, as it comes from standing on top of the tower of the entry gates. =)

  10. Ah, the days of my youth. My house as a kid in Cupertino was just down the street from Steve Jobs in Los Altos and we had an apricot orchard just like this. I have found memories of rolling in the mustard grass with the trees in bloom, looking up to the blue sky and looking for shapes in the clouds.

Its interesting that we shared a lot of the same experiences, yet have some from such different backgrounds. While I was HP Labs, Dave use to come by and talk with me about my special project, which we all had to have. My old office is now Tesla’s corporate headquarters, where I am sure you roam around. The world is very small. And, now….the rockets.

This photo recalls some amazing memories of Silicon Valley that only a few of use knew. Thats for capturing an emotion for me on film.
