The PlasticLogic screen, demonstrated by Chariman Hermann Hauser, visiting Google’s “Solve for X” from the U.K. They have developed high mobility transistors on plastic, unlike prior attempts like FlexICs.

So far the buyers are the Russians for educational eBooks… after investing $700M for a minority stake.

  1. You get to play with some of the coolest stuff. I get more and more jealous with every post. I can see how rolling up your Ipad would be cool and "might" save space, what are some other applications they are looking at? I could see wearing a screen inside a helmet that wraps around your head and gives you a panoramic view on all sides.

  2. For the past week, I have been delving into the ebook subject and here you are mentioning that technology. It looks promising!

  3. looks cool.. Rusnano? ebooks?

  4. I bet the Russians want them for something more than "educational eBooks"… at $700M a pop.

  5. Maybe cockpit displays

  6. Cood ideas all. In the near term, the main advantage is that they are rugged, light and theoretically, cheap (if they can find a mass market).

And at another table, we played with the OLPC tablet:

They are aiming at a $10 price point, I can’t fathom how (I invested in a radical internet client, before WebTV, that had everything from keyboard, modem and display, and it took an asynchronous 5-bit processor running Forth… but it still cost $29 in the channel).

In any case, here are my unfiltered notes on this one:
"printed electronics, Mary Lou’s dual mode display, high contrast reflective + low contrast LCD. no cost connectivity. stand by bits, disaggregated phased array. Bandwidth is perishable resource, infinite mesh network, trickle charging. 3W machine. 1W on assembly line. Laptop 15W – 35W"

  7. Steve,
what’s your opinion on sovereign funds like Rusnano?

  8. They showed multiple flex displays that looked more or less like this at CHI 2004! Are those ever going to hit the market and find their niche? And is that MLJ in blue shirt in back?

  9. heh, let’s just say that the Russians are late adopters of tech fads =)
