After 36 successful flights, David’s Quantum rocket had a mishap when the computer ignited the upper stage J315 motor (the ones with the medusa nozzle). It detonated overhead almost immediately.

  1. I put a pad cam very close to the rocket. These are a couple frame grabs from the very short video

Back to the DSLR. This is the J800T booster with a colorful aluminaflame

The upper stage is hanging by parachutes. The booster is still climbing in the upper right., with interstage coupler hanging to the side.

  2. What is the difference between these rockets and roman candles? I think these remote controlled helicopters I see people using would be more fun than the rockets… some of the mini-choppers even carry cameras.

  3. Have you lit a roman candle? It’s a single use tube you hold in your hand and it shoots out fireworks. This is a supersonic rocket with onboard avionics in both sections, RF tracking and parachutes for recovery. This was the 37th flight of the boost stage and the 61th flight of the upper (sustainer) stage.

Yes, they can go boom in failure more, and looks like something more simplistic. The same is true for NASCAR. And in both cases, it adds a bit of excitement to every launch.

  4. Here is a good one. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3HnGZaF7Nao&feature=endscreen... I forget where I put worlds funniest two stage failure videos, …. lets see….nope, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rCWaxXIkvXA there is one where the kid gets chased with one like one of those old dangerous fireworks.
