The Okavango Delta of Botswana is the worlds’ largest inland delta. Each year, 11 trillion liters of water flow in from the Okavango river from Angola, and disappear into the desert, never reaching the sea.

60% of the water is taken up by plants, and most of the rest evaporates directly.

But when we were there at the peak flood, the high waters corralled Africa’s greatest concentration of wildlife into a much reduced land area.

And even the big cats got near the water.

  2. [http://www.flickr.com/photos/physicsman] Ha! All he needs now are some Yosemite Sam mudflaps. Great shot, Steve. Let us know if you saw anyone down there toting the MKIII…I understand it might be in the wild, now, too….

  3. A grand mane! Tip of tail missing?

  4. yes, he’s an elder… It was bitten off long ago

  5. He’s got some big kahoonas. But he’s earned them.

  6. You’re lucky that got to see a lion, I heard them while there. Hearing them roar, at night was frightening. I wasn’t a fan of the elephants outside the tent, but happy it wasn’t lions; as I was told was later in the season.

  7. Oh man, that reminds me I have so many photos still to edit and share from that trip. Wait till you see his posse of 22 lionesses lounging about….
