It’s surreal to be at this JP Morgan AIS Summit, and I can’t get LMFAO out of my head. =)

Bill Gates over dinner: “When I read the Steve Jobs biography, I thought I should have stayed in it for four of five more years and given him some competition.
But I learned that there is someone more rude than I am.”
Charlie Rose: “Ah, Walter Isaacson noticed that.”

On philanthropy in China: The Chinese billionaires are first generation so they have huge generosity. First generation fortunes are much more generous than inherited fortunes.”

“China is full of technocrats. You can sit and have a technocratic conversation. I n D.C., you hear “they’re wrong and I’m right.” How do you know? What are you talking about? It’s very easy to get confused in D.C. We need technocrats. In healthcare and education we spend twice as much and get worse results. Have you read Obamacare? I did. There is some crazy creative writing in there. Some analyst wrote that premiums for people in their 50s will not be greater than 2x people in their 20s. I’m just looking for an infusion of IQ. The issues are so complex, we need technocrats.”

“U.S. philanthropy goes 90% to the U.S., itself a wealthy nation, and 3% goes to poor countries. My awareness of global needs before my 40s was about nil. In India I would see a lot of poor people, but I have to get to a meeting. It changed when Melinda and I went to Africa.”

Walter Isaacson — "In fact Jobs had his sights set on textbooks as the next business he wanted to transform. …… The process by which states certify textbooks is corrupt, …… But if we can make the textbooks free, and they come with the iPad, then they don’t have to be certified."

  4. If only more people became more aware sooner, perhaps the world would be a little bit different.

  5. what’s that rig at back of boat?

  6. Steve – As usual you bring up a very good point from sharing this (thank you).
Gates is right about the US government, and what I think we really need are some of the successful, smart, and energetic minds from the Tech sector to take a short break (4-8) years and run for public office(s).

Not every public office, but ones where they can have the most impact in a short amount of time.

If it were more organized, the Occupy movement should focus their efforts on Occupying D.C.

And I know that this "ideal" will unfortunately run into the "reality" of our entrenched, bureaucratic political system.

It’s really time for a strong 3rd party to develop, or better yet get rid of party’s altogether.

Just put up people who are qualified and can do the best job.

  7. fantastic!!! Washington D.C. and the planet needs "fireflies" using Bill Gates allegory…to carry the light!

  8. [http://www.flickr.com/photos/74780589@N03] "Occupy movement should focus their efforts on Occupying D.C." – I love it! Specifically, we need some serious smarties to occupy congress. But good smarties, not evil smarties. Good smarties can have critical blind spots too. I guess it’s still complicated.

  9. merci.

I am reminded of a couple passages from Stewart Brand’s Whole Earth Discipline:

"China, a nation run by engineers rather than lawyers.

When Kevin Kelly was traveling in China in 2006, he found that every elementary school in every village had a sign over the door in Mandarin with the following guidance:

    LOOK UP TO SCIENCE.
    CARE FOR YOUR FAMILY.
    RESPECT LIFE.
    RESIST CULTY RELIGION.”

It was an unusual experience to take questions from this particular audience, which they introduced as having $300B of aggregate net worth. They cold called Magic Johnson. Michal Milken hit me with a detailed question about a 1968 JP Morgan report suggesting that digital computing would be a great investment theme, but was it really? George Lucas introduced himself: “I am just a humble client.”

He is also quite excited about the progress of Terrapower (Nathan’s new nuclear reactor company). China is moving forward with a trial, and the system may come online by 2025, at the earliest. The competition is cheap natural gas. He hopes they can undercut gas, even without the 40% burden of carbon capture.

  10. Hu Jintao, the President of China, graduated in hydraulic engineering in 1965 from Tsinghua University, which is frequently ranked amongst the best universities in China.

  11. I wish Washington D.C will have people like Shahla Aly, Microsoft – she stands out as a leader, global mindset, brilliant and exceptional debate/communication skills. She can shake things when needed and be patient when it is appropriate… another photon or firefly:) in Miami…cute :D[http://www.flickr.com/photos/solerena/5940052847/in/set-72157624029207096]

  12. Technocrats are not the real solution to the problem, as many of them are politically tone deaf, politically autistic.

The real problem is not the politicians themselves, it is the level of corruption caused by underegulated lobbying, the personhood of corporations that gives them First Amendment rights, etc. Why? Because if you substitute technocrats for politicians the lobbies will simply buy the technocrats. The insurance and the pharma lobbies are the ones who derailed healthcare, not any special stupidity of the politicians.

  13. Larry Lessig, and strangely, Nancy Pelosi would agree whole heartedly.

  14. Not so strange really, any serious politician must find this environment frustrating to the point of suffocation.
