Clearing out the office a bit today, I took a closer look at the cool card from the President of Estonia.

A cup full of iPads this year?

Toomas Ilves told me that when he became President, the toughest part was giving up his Mac. Last I heard, he had just visited Apple and was working to switch the government to Macs.

  1. On the back of the card is a QR 2D barcode, that when scanned by an iPhone goes to the online version of the card with music.

    And the inside…

similar layout as the Obama card this year

  2. Awesome! Actually I like the moose the most. Moose are way better then reindeer and after seeing some singing moose heads at the Xmas markets in Berlin this year I decided they will replace any reindeer theme in my future Xmases. I fell in love with the Xmas traditions of Germany this year. What do they do around Estonia for the Holidays?

  3. must be some animal magnetism…

Estonia? Well, they pioneered the first Xmas tree in 1441

  4. Sounds very similar to the Xmas I had with an abundance of glühwein marzipan and Xmas markets. The moose reminded me of my childhood.

giving uppers and downers to the local wildlife 🙂

  5. Great series Steve. Wonder who signed for Bo?!

  6. The more I follow your photostream, the larger the inferiority complex I have.

  7. I like the Estonian one much more than the US version. Guilded federal eagles, your tax dollars at work. The Estonian card has much more beautiful designs of all kinds, and the links. Really impressed by the presentation, artistry and music.
You forgot the QR code. I have not scanned it. The entire thing is filled with visual digital code / art ideas. Artistically fun. I don’t think any Baltic languages bind to algebra, geometry, literature, verse, sacred texts, even astronomy(!) the way Arabic does. I have to dig up the some of those cards. I should review ND Tyson’s book on that but I don’t think he fully understands those aspects. Estonians don’t kill each other over geometry in other words-mostly it was outsiders killing them over things like heathen arts and crafts and not over failure as architects in proper mosque alignment. They never got that kind of cultural integration with language, art, science and religion but I’m certain, unfortunately, they would kill you for your failure as architects in proper cathedral alignments and attendance, along with political party alignments and attendance.

Why some cultures produce great architects and works is one thing I might not have given much thought to. Like if there are any telltale signs from cultures that produce buildings and art under a death penalty criteria for critical acclaim and failure. One of those innovation factors like time limits, bonus structures, death, etc. Fortunately for music and most fine arts Christianity did not operate that way for the most part. For the most part meaning adjusting for those exceptions of violent religious and notable atheist iconoclast terror.
