I heard lectures in Monterey on the problem of jellyfish blooms (earlier flickr post),
but I had no idea what lay just beneath the surface…

The Blue View Sonar is pretty cool as well.
OceanView uses it to create 3D renderings of sunken ships

Experiment Pods: They were testing theIR sensor for activation and control. A simple TV remote worked across the acrylic dome and a foot of water. (But it also controlled the Sonar screens as we discovered!)

A Mola Mola, or ocean sunfish, followed us for a bit which was very exciting as they are the strangest sea creature I have seen. They make a small cameo appearance in my video, but for a better view, check out Tierney Thys’s adorable TED Talk on sunfish and the jellies they eat (which provide only 4 calories per 100g).

  2. fantastic experience… i might try this one too if it is feasible. Love jellyfish blooms and sunfish is really interesting… i did not know these are in Monterey Bay. Nice video too.
yep, sunfish can unite the world:) together with whale songs:)

  3. Drifting with the jellies…
    Very cool.

  4. Ooh a nice sonar monitor!

  5. They are beautiful!

If imagine you are Aladdin, taking your son on a magic submarine ride to
    "A whole new world
    That’s where we’ll be
    A thrilling chase
    A wondrous place"

I recall reading a non-illustrated version of Verne’s book, drawing imagination from the words. These photos break the imagination barrier. They are beautiful! Wyland could get a vivid character in his painting, the Jellyfish.

  6. Jellies are awesome and terrifying at the same time!
that looks like a fairly high density of jellyfish…

  7. I was worried more about the squid…

P.S. For Silicon Valley folk, if you want to see the sub and learn more, it will be in Santa Clara on Wednesday, with a discussion on Ocean & Space Exploration – A Collaborative Future

  8. lol..! Gary Larson come back to us!

  9. Hooo this is SOOO cool !!!

Cool adventure. Will give us some good ideas =)

About the tittle… Went to do his other book last week, in South of France by making a Journey to the Center of the Earth. You would have loved it. Even met with underworld creatures =)

PhotonQ-Voyage au Centre de la Terre
