My good friend Erik is delighted to be launching Nest tonight!

I like the Applesque grace and dematerialization of the user interface to a simple rotary dial, much like the original iPod that Nest-founder Tony Fadell developed at Apple.

But under the covers are a sophisticated array of sensors and services – when are people in the room, how is humidity correlating with perceived temperature, what are the patterns of the day?

  1. cool and kudos! saw this on gizmodo yesterday, and started lusting for it … assuming it does celcius? and when is it coming to canada, eh?

  2. Kuddos!!! Just been to the website. Wow, that’s the next level, isn’t it.

I will show it in Europe. Does it, or can it, or would it, or will it connect with the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI). There are many initiatives in Europe to visibly measure and show "how sustainable you are", like "People, Planet, Profit" dashboards and such, but to make them consistent, thy all comply to the GRI.

Impressive. and I second the intention to put all the best technology and brains for such a cause. Erik: wish you *all the best*

I raise I glass here for you, to your success.
OK, I raise it for the two of you!

  3. Btw… I think it’s not only the design of the device that has been *inspired* by the iPod , for being born of the same person… but the name…

    Pod… Nest…

  4. It was great having you join the festivities and THANKS for your support over the years! It has meant a lot. Ohhh, and YES, thermostats can be sexy =)

  5. Wonderful! Congratulations Erik and the rest of the team!

Nest will one day be offered to the rest of the world in Celcius!

I read everything on the Nest website, even in the Nest Facebook.

  6. I’m sure (F -32)5/9 is a trivial addition to the programing of this device.

  7. Heard about this in boing boing today – best wishes to Erik and Tony.

  8. "…much like the original iPod that Nest-founder Tony Fadell developed at Apple." Or the old rotary thermostat this replaces.

  9. "It never stops learning." Sounds like V’Ger!

  10. I once owned a programmable thermostat that could be switched to celsius. But after a bit of frustration I discovered that it was internally still fahrenheit, and celsius was just for display. So for example if you started at 20, then hit the "up" button, it would look like nothing happened. The set point would still be displayed as "20" but the heat would go on, because internally the set point was really 20.6 (69 F). If you hit the "up" button nine times, the display would go up five times.

Re: "dematerialization of the user interface to a simple rotary dial," I’m imagining an iPhone with a real rotary dial, like from a Western Electric 500 set.

  11. Got ours over the weekend. My six year old installed it, literally.

  12. Just announced: Google acquires Nest for $3.2B

    Congrats!!!

  13. Well done everyone. And for the record, I work for that ‘other’ company which makes round thermostats. Love my Nest!
