On this afternoon’s hike, we came upon this from a distance, and we were a bit shocked at the motionless body… Is that a dead horse in the gully?

No idea where this mechanical animal came from…. or what it’s for.

  1. That’s just plain weird! Looks like an equine crash dummy…;-/

  2. Looks like some puzzle…capricious horse:)

  3. Poor guy, he just wanted so much to be a real horse that he ran away from the circus carousel to go to the country and mingle among the real horses. Unfortunately, without little children to ride him each day, his energy waned and he fell into the ditch lifeless. He needs a proper burial!

    This is a beautiful composition!

  4. "After nine days, I let the horse run free cause the desert had turned to sea…" ~A horse with no name. sung by America

  5. to (t)each a lesson

  6. You can lead a mechanical horse to water, but without a proper digestive system, you can’t make him drink.

  7. It’s a mannequine! Hehe sorry.

I’ve heard of them used for large animal rescue practice.

  8. and all kinds of stunts…
    war horse with rider

    and, um, other stuff

  9. If this is close to where you live Steve, (I think I recognize the gully) it is a dummy used for training our Fire Dept in "large animal rescue". We have recently added training and equipment to deal with situations like this, but prefer to avoid practicing on the real thing which can be unnecessarily risky to rescuer and rescuee… Upto now, our firefighters have been confronted with a couple of incidents for which neither their training nor their equipment was as good as we could have wished. (How would you get a panicky horse out of a swimming pool?)

  10. Good to know! Horse in pool – what a visual.

  11. And I wonder How would you REMOVE a DUMMY horse out of a HIKING AREA UNLESS you physically take it with you?

I thought you were lot better than us, pollution and waste wise… the explanation that ii is a dummy doesn’t make up for the facts that it’s dump left down there…

  12. Oh, I think it’s there for tomorrow’s practice. They have been at it for several days now.

  13. So is it robotic, for that realistic training experience?

  14. uhm… I don’t know… it looks discarded, as you actually name the pic! 😉

  15. A horse that has rolled on to it’s back and is unable to right itself is very hard to rescue. Sedatives and muscles is the way to go.

  16. Not to worry – they got her out. No horse dummy there today.

  17. Pinocchio’s horse!
