I am wearing Yuri Gagarin’s personal wristwatch today, and so it seemed like a good photo opp for another other cool artifact from the Russian space program.

The black ceramic tile that the watch rests on was part of the thermal protection system of the Soviet Union’s space shuttle Buran, which made one flight on Nov. 15, 1988.

The Buran flew only one two-orbit mission, and because it was just as dangerous as the Shuttle it imitated, it flew and landed autonomously, with no humans on board. Five tiles were lost during the flight. More photos below.

This tile was removed after the orbiter was destroyed in a hangar collapse at the Baikonur Cosmodrome in 2002.

The watch looks to be a 1960’s-era solid gold Russian watch, but I suspected it might be a forgery before I bought it. The auction house failed to notice that a letter was missing from the last name!

I got them to correct the listing, and the bidding did not go high, so I figured it was worth it to have an old Russian watch, perhaps circa 1967, that just might really have belonged to the first man in space (despite the typo in the engraving; perhaps that’s why he got rid of it =). Maybe someone in flickrland can help shed light on this.

Here is what the auction house provided (as well as originals of the documents referenced): “Attractive 23 jewel, man’s 10K gold wrist watch owned by Yuri Gagarin. Made by Russian watch maker and in working order. Back of watch engraved and has been translated as “YURI GAGARIN MAY 1, 1967”. Watch accompanied by a note translated as “The watch was bought by Gagarin in 1967. It was in [his] personal use. Gagarina.” Original translation report by Igor Moiseyev of ATLANTIC CROSSROAD, INC included. Watch face in fair condition with sweep wear on center of face patina due to age.”

  3. What a most incredible bit of mismanagement, and or financial (? political) porkbellyism (?) etc that project must have been….
Is there any evidence that it had even 10% of the NASA’s version "engineering finish" and functionality..?
    Two unmanned orbits……??
Afraid it would fall apart after 10 ?
Sure…those guys could put a small house into orbit….but…..

(In the additional photo’s I see it is shedding tiles like a bad fur coat…)

  4. I was in Moscow some years ago and happened to see one of the shuttle’s converted to what I think was a restaurant. maybe? Never went inside, just recall seeing it from inside a moving taxi.

  5. I almost got Korolev’s slide rule. It was in the first Soviet space program auction at Sotheby’s. The estimate was for a ridiculously low amount. I was just out of school but could have afforded it easily. However believing that it would go for a much higher amount I assumed it was pointless to bid. I think it barely made the minimum. I was thunderstruck, it was Korolev’s slide rule! I still regret not bidding for it.

  6. Oh, cool that you got it and love to see some part of Russian space history represented here:)
and love the pictures above also… and see one very handsome looking estonian happy face in Moscow, sweet:) my home town in a way:)

Right, Yuriy Gagarin is not spelled correctly in Russian: should be "Ю́рий Гага́рин", so it makes me think if the watch is in fact fake…but it does look soviet and old… maybe you could ask some of his relatives… and 1967 matters to me too:) coincidence:)i

  7. "Gagarina" would be his daughter Elena. Seems unlikely his name would be misspelled if this were genuine. I have a "Rollex" watch that I’m pretty sure is fake.

  8. Fake Rollex is made in China:) this i know for sure… but fake Gagarin (Gagrin) watch is not chinese, got to be soviet:D still cute…

    Hmmm…
Looks a bit like fiberglass to me…(!)

    A Russian Rolex indeed……….

  10. It’s actually quite attractive, in a retro way, with the red sweeping hand. If it clicked like quartz then all bets are off. Looks like someone pried the lid off the back once, and I am tempted to look inside too.

Remaining optimistic for a bit… If someone wanted to make a fake, you’d think they would not skip a letter. Hurts resale value. Perhaps it was personalized by someone inept… or chiseled under the influence…. =)

[http://www.flickr.com/photos/83025347@N00] – Good connection to the daughter. I notice that she is currently director of the Kremlin Museums, so if I can connect with her on the note, I may be able to get the answer. Thanks! P.S. anyone know how to search for her handwriting samples?

  12. It looks decent..
Problem with these old watches is they need (expensive) servicing every 5 years….
As for the misspelled name…seems odd all right..(!)
maybe they are doing a double fake out ??

The world of fakes, imitations and memorabilia is a real wild west show.

  13. The name on the watch is "луч", which means ray or beam (of light for example). These were apparently made by Minsk Watch in Belarus. There are similar watches on eBay; search for "Luch watch". The company is still in business.

  14. Here is the interview with Elena Gagarina: blog.britishcouncil.org/2011/04/gagarin_orbit1/
She will probably respond if asked about this watch. Also if it was not "chiseled under the influence" – it could be done by a kid, looks like somewhat childish handwriting in GAGRIN… unless somebody in China did it:D

    +1

  16. Oh that’s hilarious. How did that happen? Last minute switch-a-roo walking down the isle?

Dave – wait a minute, are you saying they never landed on the moon???

    Alternate Realities

and speaking of amazing forgeries, you have to check out the Apple Stores in China… How do you copy the sales experience? "these salespeople… all genuinely think they work for Apple."

  17. !!
In true Soviet style, the "lander" resembles a 1927 waffle iron…
The history of the actual Luna lander/return vehicles is interesting though….

Shame to see Atlantis land,…wasn’t it ?

  18. Yeah…. but she flew well…

    Atlantis Landing

and there will be a next generation… better, stronger, safer than before…

  19. Yes…NASA has all kinds of technology it can call on with pretty short notice…
Heck it could probably spark up a Saturn V in an emergency…
So personally,I have no long term worries about the future of manned flight…

(And I hear the Falcon project is coming along well too…)

  20. Ha-ha, vennetaj – glad you like Kin Dza Dza too… hilarious… i see the next generation stronger and safer than before:):) hugs and kisses!!!

  21. That next generation bird looks a little like the one Lee Majors Steve Austin flew.

    doot doot doot doot…..

  22. I also read the Apple Store in China in Chinese yesterday.
This method of competition is by being a copy-cat.
On the other hand, Best Buy is not able to compete
with local retailers, and is the blue color that is not
    being copied.

  23. reposting the hidden extra detail from above

  24. Back of watch:Lot-0276-backand note:Lot-0276-noteInterestingly, May 1, 1967 is the the National Day of Worker Solidarity, the day Brezhnev wanted the first Soyuz flight to launch, and Gagarin was the backup pilot for that mission, which ended tragically with the < first death during a space mission.
