Where is mama’s head? They say the zebra stripes, when bunched together in a herd, confuse predators.

The colt is quite young, about a month old.

  1. Mama’s head is facing us and the other zebra’s head is behind her back. True, it is a confusing image but we are perhaps smarter than the predators. 😉

A fascinating photo with beautiful colours. The are zebra’s mother-child dance is delightful!

The bird has a good position, eating away the insects I imagine.

  2. Actually there are four animals in this shot! 🙂

  3. If it’s summer, it’s Africa!

The blending colors of the Savannah almost get your mighty Canon working harder.

  4. Mind games in nature?

  5. vennettaj, funny, and the baby’s head is attached to the mother’s stomach too!

  6. I need a bird like that on my back . . .a massaging bird.

  7. right you all are… I like how the stripes line up across the bodies…

  8. Usualy with a zebra, it is ambiguous as to whether the decoration is a white background with black stripes or vice versa.

With this family there is no question – there are brown stripes between the black stripes on a white background – compare with e.g. your Zambian Zebra [http://www.flickr.com/photos/jurvetson/5883770862/in/photostream]

This would seem to indicate that this family lives further south – tircolored markings like this get rarer the further north you go. Supposedly they (used to?) exist in Kenya and Ethiopia but I never saw one
