It was like a surreal sequence from the movies, driving around the bustling Lufthansa Frankfurt hub at night.

Then we saw the alien craft – the largest aircraft ever manufactured in series (more than a one off, like the Soviet airplane that carried the Buran, for which there was just one).

This is Lufthansa’s maiden A380, bathed in light and fed by three jetways. When they announced that there are 16 exits, I thought of the Titanic.

  1. Whoa, baby… Thar be an air whale!

  2. As a pilot I’ll admit it’s an impressive bit of technology but I hear they’re a real pain to parallel park.

  3. Are you still hanging around Germany?

  4. On the way from F-class building? Awesome view.

    Hmmm……Is that in economy ?

If it does not have propellers and a decent glide angle, I don’t trust them….
Too many episodes of MAYDAY maybe……

  6. It’ll never get off the ground.

  7. As much as I love to fly, these are intimidating! Beautiful shot from the tarmac !

  8. I had not heard of the Buran program. Ironically the one Buran prototype was destroyed on 12 May 2002, when the hangar housing the Buran in Kazakhstan collapsed, due to poor maintenance (wikipedia).

    Ya…I read that too…sort of sad…
They were also trying to buld a second carrier airplane….gave up a few years ago…lack of $$
The Buran design looks like a case of 100% industrial espionage ….
(not that this is not a bilateral pastime…)

  10. Cool comp. It does look immense!

  11. Great shot, really well seen.

  12. Ungainly and fugly. 747 still wins the super-heavy beauty contest.
