while U2 plays Zooropa

The Barco screen was custom designed for the 360* Tour, bringing the stadium format to a new level. With the band at the center instead of off to one side, the “back” seats are more marketable.

Here’s my video compilation from the show, starting with Mark Kelly singing from the ISS orbiting overhead… a wonderful Major Tom… and this was coincidentally coincident with the giant solar storm.

Details: This is the largest LED screen used on a concert tour, and the world’s first transformable LED screen (we saw three modes: high, low and mesh during the show). Here’s a construction video.

And the band needed three of them to support the Tour because it takes 4 days to just to set up for a one night show.

  1. The solid TV ring suddenly started to drop, on a curtain of swivels, into a conical mesh

and then City of Blinding Lights emerged from the sonic landscape…
and it started to look like a four-legged angry robot from the movies

  5. I actually was on stage with U2 in Milan last year, during this show. We were part of the ONE crew, and walked around the stage with Aung San Suu Kyi masks… [http://www.flickr.com/photos/davidorban/3701519060/]

It was a great gig, and being able to have an insiders’ view of the show was fabulous.

  6. very cool. I just discovered that they got a gigapan picture of me chilling just before the show… way up in the rafters…

  7. So you did get into the shot! I was going to look for you, but you saved me the effort. I’m still bummed they only got the top of my head. And I was 1/4 of the distance from the camera. Maybe next time!
