“Been There, Never Done This!”
The motto of the International Lunar Resarch Park (ILRP)… as seen on my delegate nameplate from the exploratory workshop at NASA this week.

The ILRP is a permanent moon base.

The primary economic case is for a remote fuel depot, generated from lunar water in-situ with robotically assembled nuclear power plants. Given the recently discovered water reserves on the moon, they could be extracted from the regolith and broken down into O2 and H2 by electolysis. Fuel and water extracted on the moon, away from the Earth’s gravity well, can be much more inexpensive than launching it from Earth.

Many other science possibilities in the brainstorm, such as a polar deep-field mirror made from liquid in a crater (no atmosphere to interrupt a perfect surface).

Couple salient comments:

“The technology risk to get there is not significant. Mining and extraction is a risk.”

“The Chinese are going to Mars. That is for sure.”

“20.4 million tourists visit space attractions (KSC, NASM, etc.) each year, more than the 17 million that go to the Magic Kingdom.”

  2. Excellent! Can’t beat the motto, either. Recently saw a Sci-Fi movie on Lunar exploration and mining called appropriately enough, "Moon" (2009 with Sam Rockwell). Very interesting storyline interweaving human cloning as a renewable source for a future Lunar Workforce focused on mining Helium-3.

  3. yeah!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  4. Just need to keep moving outward and exploring!

  5. I was always fond of this moonbase:

  6. Steve – great idea, but somebody owes British TV legend Gerry Anderson a few beers, by the looks of things: that’s the SHADO moonbase from UFO!

    SHADO's moonbase

Seen on my Flickr home page. (?)

  7. sure looks similar…. but upgraded with a satellite TV dish

WF&DT: I remember that series fondly. Looking ahead to

  8. Oh, and my Dad pointed out a cool TopGear video of the next generation lunar rover:

  9. Great video…(of a great show)
This prototype looks a bit over engineered…like all cars they just put too many new features on.
    Its your uncle’s Lunar Rover.

  10. dave h, I agree. In the video you can clearly see that the old Lunar Rover had two $4.95 aluminum lawn chairs, bought from the Orlando Kmart. The new one probably has orthopedic, power adjustable 22 positon RECARO reclining seats with power lumbar support and hot and cold variable height massage.. Clearly over a million dollars each!!!.

  11. Great post – and the sits sound cool:-)

I suspect those chairs were from somewhere besides Kmart…!
    (Crate and Barrel…?)
    !
I was actually rethinking this cost issue this morning though……….
How come this buggy is 6 times cheaper than the original…?
NASA "demonstrating" a new fiscal skill…?
Or maybe by the time it is "flight certified" it will be 300 million..?

Anyways….appreciate as always, you and your son coming up with this stuff.

  13. SHADO and Space:1999 definitely sprang to my mind 🙂
