[http://www.flickr.com/photos/79289632@N00] – Well, it’s the fastest growing religion in the U.S., and it’s fascinating to see a new religion bloom in modern times since there are records of the events, not just a redacted religious text.
It’s such a bizarre history, so much more absurd than any verbal summary that I had heard. And like Islam, Mormonism fosters the formation of splinter fundamentalist sects since anyone can be a modern prophet with revealed truth. Anyone can become a god. It’s a powerful message to seduce on the front end, but ultimately very dangerous. There are over 200 Mormon fundamentalist sects, some of them brutally violent.
And, whether pre-meditated or accidental — whether by purposeful design or mimetic evolution — these are the religions that are spreading the fastest on the planet.
What is the name of the text?
Another bizarre one (though much less pervasive) are the Hutterites. My family which view themselves as well educated people of the world passively ignore me when I protest meals made with Hutterite grown food. Its frustrating to say the least.
Krakauer’s Under the Banner of Heaven.
I almost didn’t read it because I disliked the niche deep dive of the opening story of whack violence, but then it steps back and traces the history of Joseph Smith. I would suggest jumping straight to that, as it motivates the exploration of the splinter groups.
and a cool planet!!
P.S. I notice than an original first edition print of The Book of Mormon is up for auction:
"The first edition is… the only one to identify Smith as the author. In all subsequent editions, Smith is acknowledged as merely the "translator."
Must have been a Doh! moment – I’m not the author, right…
interesting… i am blissfully ignorant when it comes to mormon’s and know nothing about them… funny, how most religions claim some Egyptian heritage and of course there is always a star and a light… this is basics:) even biology: plants grow towards the light…
i have worked with some mormons and figured that some of them do not like women in work environments, feel threatened in a way and sincerely think that women have to be kept barefeet and pregnant… so i have some very major concerns when it comes to mormons:) they got to stay within the same legal boundaries like everyone else… and if they do not want… oh, it got to be their problem!
