Anonymous street artist JR operates in the quiet of the night to transform a urban scene or slum into a massive work of art.

She is from Morro da Providencia, the oldest favela in Rio de Janeiro. He pasted portraits of its female residents on the sides of the houses in which they lived. The distinctively monochrome eyes and faces were positioned looking towards the centre of Rio, a striking image to wake up to.

Here’s a cool video of his latest TED Prize project… where you can participate.

And his TED Prize talk just went up.

  1. You have to go and see the movie Steve. We went to see it in Paris with few TEDsters after TEDx Paris last month and that was something !!! Beautiful, amazing, human and deep !
    Great frenchy this JR =)

It was a great session yesterday. I am sure you loved the bioluminescent talk too =)

What photo are you sending to the project ? =)

  2. Ok, will trust French on frenchy definition…

  3. mais oui! (très drôle)

  4. @vennettaj video is still great! art is a great way to unite people:) loved the caricature portraits and very sad about women roles in some places in the world… actually in the US femininity is under attack with all the media… we do not really understand the things which are right in front us and see the faults in other cultures easily (human nature).

The US or Europe needs this type of exercise as much… it just would not be the same type of problems addressed (fast food can be one)…
I did try to participate, I do not have many self portraits with the requirements outlined… so attached couple… i like his wish… to change the world…

  5. yep, one person’s problem is another person’s opportunity:)

  6. So sad you couldn’t make it to the photo booth :((((( !!!!

  7. Congratulation, happy for you!

Although if I would have time to put pictures of something – they would not be my own (i am not very passionate about my own portraits) but pictures like this one below (the ones i am really crazy about):

  8. @solerena Oh, I understand!!! But JR’s work is about portraits, that’s why, there’s no option (even when in my case would have looked like a choice made 😉

  9. here’s another angle!
    @TED2011: JR -- TED 2011 Prize Winner

  10. Here’s another one… wiht the woman sniffing the TED Prize…

  11. I understand why he got the first prize; he is a great speaker and has a fantastic sense of humor. I felt the real compassion he had towards his projects and people involved. At the same time “copy exactly” strategy might not be the best in the circumstances when they present this art to very different and diverse cultural audiences. In some places of the world it could bring more pain and suffering to the women whose portraits are posted publically this way. Understanding all the nuances of each culture and intercultural communication is a serious job by itself. So would I be in his shoes, I would ask people who are local for their feedback and solicit their ideas in order to implement this type of projects.
Another issue here is quantifying the statement of changing the world with some examples. I remember distinctly how he talked about people’s reactions, would it be enthusiasm or curiosity etc. But is there any evidence at all that it helped to change anything in each local community at all?
Like we have an everyday prove that technology does improve our lives and change them, working in high-tech I see how fast things move… I love art and I think beauty can change the world but its value is mostly esthetical… like French art and culture is a jewel by itself to cherish. Mixing art and politics is pushing it to the field of politics and diplomacy where the rules are rather sophisticated and the price can be human lives.
These are just a few thoughts I wanted to share. After watching his TED talk I was very enthusiastic – he is a type of person who can motivate others and you just start feeling desire to participate in something, whatever it is. These are my few thoughts after the fact. Enjoy listening to other opinions as well. Thank you.

  12. @solerena I agree with much of what you say! And many people were prone to propose offerings for the project that were really good and in line with your observations. It’s just that the project has to be respected as it is, if you want to be in. Otherwise, of course, there’s always the chance to do something different ourselves, right?

  13. and he is so photogenic…

    JR

He started at age 15 as a graffiti artist, scurrying across the roofs of Paris…

  14. And we had a great time with him Saturday here in Paris, sharing what he did since his TED Prize…. very busy changing the world inside out =)
