With 150 million subscribers in India and 50 in Africa, Airtel is the 5th largest telco in the world.

Some tidbits:
96% of their customers are on pre-paid calling plans (but the 4% on monthly plans generate 18% of the revenue).

VOIP is their main concern as 85% of their revenue still comes from voice.

Nokia’s market share in India plummeted from 70% to 38% with the rise of new low-cost phones with clever names like Blackcherry.

Phones that allow for two SIM cards are quite popular so that they can have one permanent number for inbound calls and another for outbound that can be easily changed whenever a better price is available.

  1. Love it. Ah, good ol’ India!

Seen in my contacts’ photos. (?)

  2. Leino: nothing directly, but they are a potential partner for our mobility companies. So we spent some time with mgmt

  3. I’ve noticed that the cheap phones from China tend to have two sim slots. And often bear a striking resemblance to the more popular brands.

  4. Interesting comment on Nokia…they’ve been attacked at the low end by Taiwanese ODMs who sell low cost rebrandable feature phones to small carriers, and at the high end by Android and iPhone. Even Airtel, Tata and Reliance have been caught flat footed in the Indian market.
