I have been anticipating this launch for over a year.

Dick Matthews’ custom machined design was a work of beauty. Each of the three J-motor boosters has a retention screw that is severed by a computer-initiated pyro charge that shoots a cylindrical knife down the inside of the rocket. The boosters fall away as the computer ignites the central motor in flight. It could have been great.

Alas, the partial lighting of only one of three boosters doomed the flight, as the asymmetrical thrust sent the rocket into spastic gyrations right in front of us. One of the computers sensed the lack of vertical climb as the apogee event, and deployed the chute while the motor was still burning.

From the frame-by-frame analysis below, it looks like the booster severing mechanism did the trick. I hope to see Dick run with this one again next year!

  1. Well at least they put on a great show when the launch goes haywire.

  2. Keerblamo as they say. Interesting that we are able to deploy such technology as private citizens – for sport, hobby, etc. when only a few decades ago it would have been technologically nearly impossible.

  3. Costly lesson, yet good show–will the solution come by appropriating some existing (military) mechanism, or by virtue of sheer creativity?

  4. So cool, Steve. Thanks for sharing.

  5. fCh: next time: thermite dipped igniters. Another problem is that the motors were old, and could have used a big of a pre-scrub with a wire brush to remove oxidation. But, I’d bet on the thermite. =)

gslkich: hobbyist space exploration, the next frontier….

  6. The chute deployment could be avoided with a properly configured altimeter like a Featherweight Raven. Hopefully it didn’t suffer too much damage, I really enjoy ambitious projects like this.

  7. Any space and launch insurance? looks cool:)

  8. How much was salvaged?

  9. Outstanding photos of a real rocket disaster! You are the "Rocket Man" when it comes to photography!

  10. Rocket heading to Bruno’s for a beer I presume..

  11. Talking about rockets, just saw an awesome video of 3,130 Estes Rockets launched simultaneously Enjoy if you haven’ t seen it yet ; )

  12. Well, it made for a decent photo.

  13. I thought this was the Fireball-XL5
