That’s how this whole mess got started… The Estes armada… =)

And my 2007 TED talk with a slide show of how it went from here….

  1. Looks a bit like the Darwin Awards…. My first rocket launch as an adult.

    Darwin Awards

(oh, and it just looks scary. We were not lighting matches, but wiring up the igniter)

Never did launch one vertically as a child though… Nothing to aim at up there 😉

  2. It is wonderful to discover a serious interest as a hobby. It is also great to have photo souvenirs of the first occasions to enjoy these new interests.

Steve, these are nice photos to look through for your children!

  3. Your rocket paraphernalia was quite elementary in those days. Now, you should paste two photos to compare the size of then and now rockets!

  4. An oft-repeated story. You start with small, innocuous doses that give the, um, experimenter the illusion that he’s in complete control. Then follows the inexorable progression towards more and more potent fixes — the classic gateway rocket scenario 😉

  5. "nothing to aim at up there"… excellent! i resonate highly with this. my initial experience with estes was the same… too many terrestrial targets of opportunity.

  6. Ahhh…I remember this day well! It was just my second rocket launch as an adult and I had no idea how BIG these things can get or what lay ahead. Fast forward 7 years and I can hardly believe all of the ballistic returns, massive CATOs the QP doll and ohhh, the successful flights too =)

    Thanks for posting!

  7. Great photos. Love the second even more. Closer to the rockets that we used to launch as kids. Fast forward to your most recent photos today….is it evolution, education or a combination. Just remember….at times you still have to "DUCK"!

  8. Funny thing is, we launched quite a few of these things in my back yard….."back in the day" (and I’m not that old). We’d probably be arrested today!

  9. oh man, i think i had most of those at some point in my life. that’s the sidewinder in your hand right? (at least that’s what it was called when it came out, i was the first person in my elementary school science class to buy it.) and the comanche-3.

my first was the red max though, got it when i was 4 or 5 for a quarter at a yard sale. i see that they’re still making it. might have to pick one up.

  10. …or you could upscale it this time….

    Red Max Scale Up

keeping it proportional to the builder =)

  11. woah, that’s amazing. and probably cost more than my car. and sadly probably safer than my car.
