We saw about 20 wild turkeys today while mountain biking in Long Ridge Open Space. Never seen so many. It was a good four hour ride, with cooling mists falling for the long climb out.

That is amazing to see so many in a file. Ah, the things you can see on a mountain bike ride. It is never boring, I am sure.

About twice a year I get a pack of wild turkeys that will trot through my yard, occasionally with babies in tow. There are two specific trees near my house in which they like to perch. It’s the weirdest thing to step outside and see six or eight turkeys sitting in a small tree about 15 feet off the ground. Hard to imagine how they manage to flap their way up there, and I never get to see them actually do it; and I’ve never figured out why they only like those two trees (whether it’s the type of tree etc).

They are certainly ubiquitous. We have a flock in the yard most years though they manage to stay hidden most of the time. About three years ago they numbered about 2 dozen. They don’t seem as plentiful the last year or so. They are relatively tolerant of humans out our way and so at times they have even come into the front yard. It is truly a strange sight.

The photo, colours, background and subject remind me of another animal encounter last year in France =)
