He’s so much happier now. I spent a magical weekend with him, brainstorming about philanthropy.

It was off the record, to allow for unfettered speech, so I can’t dive into details, but I can share my overall impression: he is incredibly well read, his fanatic intensity has diffused out to a wide circle of empathy and scope of influence, and he happily dives deep into random topics we raised — from astrobiology to atheism to Africa.

And then we went to see Waiting for Superman.

  1. …now that he’s got time and a different set of objectives, wisdom is in sight.

  2. Yeah, he’s so much happier now. I spent a magical weekend with him, brainstorming about philanthropy.

  3. you’re both thinkers but i you struck the proper pose 😉

  4. Nice to see you together, Steve…..two people who have made a difference on our planet in their short lifespans.

  5. Fascinating! Thanks for sharing this. Gates looks like a genuinely nice man, one who would make a fine friend if you could keep up with him. (Well sort of keep up with him.)

  6. I think my opinion changed about Bill’s personality when I saw the MS video they made of his "last day at the office". It was great to see him have a great sense of humor. Despite being a Mac guy now, it would still be amazing to have your experience of picking his brain and exchanging insights.

  7. "And three different colours strips of cloth and some creative thinking you can breath new life into any tired and drab couch cushion…"

  8. For most of us, contemplating how to make the world a better place is just a dream. Having the resources to do so is out of reach for most of those who even have the time. The realization that one has both the time and capacity to do so and then acting on it is commendable. There are many of us who envy those of you with the desire and sustenance to change the world. It is I am sure an awesome sense of achievement, and at the same time a heavy burden to bear.

  9. Had to leave in a rush this morning for a GI bleed, so didn’t get to finish the thought.
In an era which has shown a strong tendency toward a return to superstition and scientific skepticism, we need those of you who can help maintain a spotlight on education, scientific advancement, and the continued survival of this race we call human.

  10. We all know how Bill has changed the world and picture posted by Esther Dyson yesterday on flickr shows how the world has changed Bill:

Interesting to compare the two images:)

  11. Did the atmosphere between your noggins start to ionize or emit audible crackling sounds?? 😉

  12. Who’s the other guy on the right ….. ha ha…..nice 😉

  13. dude – you can include active URLs in your spam. Flickr does not filter them out. We do by blocking you, and when enough of us do, you’re out. So might as well include clickable links.

  14. Lot of respect for you both….

Keep on…. it is very important .. and your humanity will always make a difference on this planet….

I trust the future..because I trust we can make a difference!

    Cheers!

  18. After this year TED I have finally understood that Bill Gates is “Magister Ludi” like Steve Jobs! You have the same potential.

  19. Thanks to his misanthropic Microsoft crap, the world’s peoples no longer do things in a logical manner, and like lemmings settle for it’s gawd awful designs. Another American clown dominates, rips off, laughs all the way.

  20. and a reunion at the same place, 5 years later: The Girl's Effect on Bill Gates, with Malala, the youngest awardee of the Nobel Peace Prize
