Great shots! Were you using a tripod? Handheld at 300mm, even with stabilizer, would be remarkable.

I thought you might have been in Maine. We had a young moose running around Portland and the duck pond in Deering Oaks Park before they corralled him back to Evergreen Cemetery and the woods.

jerryfi_99: Yup, it’s a handheld shot with no image stabilizer (and a polarizer making it tougher still).
When it comes to rockets and wildlife, I prefer the flexibility of a fast composition. I just use a tripod for night shots and HDR, where it is absolutely essential.
For hiking/travel trips, I carry one lightweight lens – a Tamron 28-300mm with a circular polarizer. The optics are not great, and it’s an old one without a stabilizer. (Actually, it is my very first lens… that came with my first SLR, a surprise xmas gift in 2005.)
But it lets me leave the camera bag behind.
I also carry a pocket camera with me, for macros, strange compositions, test shots, and fill-in flash.
I bring my favorite landscape lens, the 16-35mm f/2.8, with me on these trips, but rarely in the hiking bag. If it’s an urban/arcitectural outing, then I will just bring the wide-angle and leave the Tamron in the room. In short, these two lenses + pocket cam cover everything I need.
The exceptions are rocket launches, where the longer 100-400mm substitutes for the Tamron… and indoor speeches, where the 100mm f/2 is all I need.

All of my photos are free to use forever with a simple photo credit: “Photo by Jurvetson on flickr” And in this case, you don’t need to even bother with the photo credit if it messes up the look of the label.
Also, for my personal collection, would it be possible to send me a beer or just a photo of the final version. I like to see where things end up
