We have three bald eagles here at Donner Lake near where I like to fly fish early in the morning dawn when I am home. I will have to take you up here to watch them. They steal fish from other birds. It is quite remarkable to watch. The other birds hunt the trout, and swoop down into the lake and snatch the fish. Then the pursuit begins…..
The bald eagles, high from their perch over the lake take flight, and you get a dog fight better than top gun. The result is that these huge birds in flight swoop in and with their huge talons, take the fish out of the other birds talons, and with the other bird still attached, proceed to use their aerodynamic dominance to shake loose the original bird, and then fly off with the fish.
The eagle’s size and massive leverage is no match for the entrepreneurial hunter that snags the original catch. Reminds me of the later stage venture capital firms, unlike DFJ, that are unwilling to back those of us that take the risks to move technology and ventures forward in second and third rounds of financing with technology companies. I often wonder if there is another predator that supports the original birds that catch the fish, much like DFJ does for early stage entrepreneurs, and so passionately supports early stage entrepreneurs with early stage financing.
Interesting parallels between birds, venture capital, and entrepreneurs. Reminds me of my beaver hypothesis regarding innovation in the valley.
