“This place is perfectly safe.

Then why are we wearing hard hats?

It is safe… ugh… for safety. We are wearing safety helmets.

Check. Mate.”

— from my favorite news story, on the LHC

Just got back from a lab tour. Wish I could show you more.

  1. LOL… The reason for hard hats (and lab coats, booties, nitrile gloves, etc) is to distract you from the synthetic mutant genome that is about to fall on you from the ceiling…. with a one in two probability! =8-0

  2. Simple physics tells us you are either safe or you are not safe. And that maps into a 50-50 chance. So stop kvetching and wear the helmet already!

  3. I’ve had the same "beef" about wearing facemasks when entering the room of some patients in the hospital. First of all, it imparts serious limitations on the physical/emotional portion of the physician visit. I truely believe that the visit to the bedside isn’t just the mechanics of diagnosis and treatment. Second, I just can’t imagine those tiny microbes and viruses stopping at the mask fabric! We know they don’t. I have the same risk of contracting the disease if I meet that person on the street.
Just think of it this way….you’ll be happy to know that by following the rules you have guaranteed the job of some poor administrator who’s only task is to think up these lame rules that we need to follow. Besides, who else is going to wear the goofy hats and masks if we don’t 😉 Frankly, it looks good on you! Wear it while driving the Tesla! Perhaps you’ll start a new trend!

  4. Hahaha
I am at iGEM 2010 Europe Workshop, and as I was looking at your photo, someone is asking How about security in the US (talking about what to do, when sending samples =P

Cool and funny portrait !!! =)

  5. was the roof of the lab rated against meteorites?

it is always better to be safe than sorry when considering the possibility of an ill-timed bolide bouncing off the ol’ noodle.

    heh.

  6. …we like.

And this comes out in the NYT

    SingularityHub

  7. Haha Brilliant video on the LHC "50/50" That’ s science =P
    Loved it !!!

Thanks for the discovery and cool article on NYT.
Just came back from a long walk and diner in Paris with a team from iGEM. Love the way they look at science from a Biotech 2.0 point of view.
Lots of talk about singularity related topics came tonight.
You would have love it !!! =)
