…to Solyndra, in their new manufacturing facility under construction with $535M of help from the DOE.

“The foundation of economic growth will always be companies — like Solyndra.”

The company makes cylindrical thin-film solar cells, which then array in a frame, like the one in the clutches of the friendly robot.

The floor is 15 ft. thick for seismic strength.

  1. More jobs for robots! Let the uprising begin!

  2. Maybe he should consider upgrading his teleprompter to a thin film solar cell prompter and recycle some of that energy.

On a serious note, I wouldn’t mind having Venetian blinds made out of those thin film solar cells in an array to help defray electrical expenses.

  3. These solar cells are popping up all over southern NJ on telephone poles. I’m putting in a small 2.5 acre vinyard out back this year. Considerning integrating solar panels out in the field. Would be rather cool, I think. As far as robots are concerned…. they can have my job!

  4. IPO did not go over too well. Withdrawn Jun 18 , Wilbur G "DRAM" Stover real or robot makes no difference. Maybe John Walecka thought it was a bad idea.
IPO "withdrawn due to adverse market conditions." Well the CBOE IPO was sure not too adverse during these troubled times.
All these Stanford VC types. I could have told them the Chinese got the big solar edge. Great human terrain map from these companies that Obama visits. A more accurate title for the photo I think would be Obama insider handout.

  5. and as the whisper-mill predicted at the time… it was a sinking ship.

From hero (S-1) to zero (Chapter 11) in 18 months.

  6. "More jobs for robots! Let the uprising begin!"…. ou non !!! =)

  7. Dang. I hope those unemployed robots find happy new homes and do not get sent to some sweatshop or worse. They might get bitter and start clinging to guns, religion and antipathy to people who aren’t like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations.
As long as they don’t make any trouble for the DOE they should do fine at a place like SoloPower but they think CIGS means they get to smoke on the job so they better get a taste for smokeless….

Credit where credit is due, a great photo in composition, so ahead of the curve and with a grabber blurb. No photojournalist has anything even close to this.

  8. Here is the story in graphic polysilicon price detail…..

Which is great if you are China doing it the old fashioned way. Unfortunately look at when the prices tanked. Oooooops, I guess we were ok when the loans were getting done but the value was in the tank in early ’09. So don’t listen to anybody telling you how it is a case of China outspending us on solar tech. Who could have foreseen polysilicon prices would fall for gods sake.

  9. U.S. Dept. of Energy and our leaders had done a great jobs for trying to clean up our biggest mess in our modern history and prepared for future.
Solyndra’s management and Board of Directors represented our biggest crooks and painful lessons to learn. It has nothing to do with robot and we are our own worse enemy. Forgive but never forget these names.
