The view from the podium. Congratulations to all of you! (larger size if you are in back)

Their excitement was palpable, and I’m not sure which of us had more butterflies in our stomach.

I was the commencement speaker this evening at my alma mater in Dallas. After thanking the teachers that made my life path possible, I said:

Not so long ago, I was sitting in those seats. I was a bit insecure and socially awkward – in short, a young budding geek. It took me a few years to embrace that identity, and I’ll try to share some of that excitement tonight.

It is a great honor to be up here with you, and preparing for this talk was quite daunting. My first thought was to reflect on my commencement speaker, and frankly, I could not recall a single thing that he said. I think I was a bit distracted at the time, and hoped he would just get on with it. So, in case the same thing happens tonight, and you don’t remember a single word that I say, I hope to leave you with something. The view here from the podium is breathtaking. [whip out camera] So, smile. [click] Wait… someone blinked. [click] Perfect. I will post this on flickr tonight so you have something from this evening.

  1. Congrats ’10! Congrats speaker!

    Cheers,
    ’01

  2. Also, please let me know if you have a recording of your commencement speech, as I’d be interested in seeing it.

    Cheers,
    Tony

  3. They will remember but you will remember it more. The circles of life. They creep up on you sometimes when you least expect them. Very touching!

  4. Interesting how touching back on one’s own personal youthful history can birth more butterflies than speaking to a room full of professional notables encountered in one’s more solidified adulthood. Sounds like you were a great speaker.

  5. Great intro, Steve! When you can, share the whole speach with us. I bet I’m not the only one who wants to read it.

  6. thanks y’all!

    Erik – the headmaster wants to put a transcript online. I’ll let you know when I see it.

    Meanwhile, based on the parents who came up to me afterward, this passage was particularly appreciated… =)

    …In short, celebrate the childlike mind… Now I realize that for boys your age, about to experience collegiate life for the first time, it may be dangerous and downright reckless to suggest you fully embrace immaturity. I am referring only to cognitive curiosity. As for your physical health and safety, my only advice to you is that if you find yourself encircled by a crowd chanting “Do it! Do it!” it is almost always a good idea not to do whatever it is.

  7. Heh… and this is what I saw in front of us driving back to the hotel:

    Texas 4-Now

    The secessionists are alive and well!

    Vanita – merci… (and it turns out I was in your Houston earlier that day, tasting some microbial ethanol from GlycosBio =)

  8. Great ‘ice breaker’ to begin your address! I’m sure it will be memorable.

  9. I hope they put it on ice for you.
    It’s not red wine or English beer ya know.
    Vroom Vroom
    ‘-}

  10. =)

    Just don’t do it

    Frankie sez Relax…

  11. Damn, the suit rental company must love that school.

  12. TP
    Sorry…but that was my first thought too….!!
    Weird a bit…
    But check out most kids on graduation day…over the top is the new normal.

    Still…….humility is the best lesson one ever learns…almost as valuable as avoiding peer pressure.
    Are we still teaching (enough) humility,social responsibility, versus individual achievement/acquisitiveness…?

  13. Yeah…. and P.S. the full transcript is now available in English and Spanish

  14. Thx. I just last night transcoded the newly discovered video my dad took in 2010. His tapes had been lost in the closet clutter for a decade (and my Dad passed in 2014).
