Jamie just posted the video from the Mercury Joe escape tower, showing the undocking of this capsule, and the drift back from above.

All was recovered perfectly. G.I. Joe will fly again (he is in the capsule here with his own video perspective… which with come out later as a montage of at least 7 video cams).

You guys are getting me all hot and bothered now…

  3. Mercury Joe is flying Freedom 7 (some use his civilian name, Alan Shephard, the first American in space).

Liberty Bell 7 is the one that sank, and I just obtained a component from it. I was thinking of our hero during the bidding…

  4. Obviously you are all over the Mercury program….!

  5. Great shot! The 5D Mark II seems supremely suited for this kind of stuff. Great video . A really pristine clip.

But even more interested in Apollo.

P.S. the montage video just went up.

  7. I know you said you had a battery contact issue on your son’s flight. What seems to be the greatest issue regarding the camera "failures" on these flights?

  8. For me, ballistic reentry… =)

On the 50th anniversary of the first American in orbit, it seems fitting to share some more photos of Mercury Joe:
