My son launched this just-released G75-10M in his epoxy-reinforced Aerotech Initiator, a fine test vehicle for new propellants.

The propellant has titanium sponge mixed in for a dramatic sparky effect (here’s a primer on propellants that I wrote for scienceblogs).

Unlike the Skidmark motors, these new Metalstorms have white smoke, and so I plan to try a few at the Dairyaire night launch. They also seem to pack more Newton-seconds, which is surprising given the energy penalty for the pyrotechnics (the G75 and G80 both have 120 N-sec). Will move up to the H, J and K sizes next.

Here is a short video of this launch. The Initiator went much higher than we expected.

  1. The AeroTech MetalStorm propellant has a high ISP then SkidMark or SpitFire propellant.

  2. Listen…I found this;

    But wondered if you/someone might volunteer a few good links to what happening in this hobby…

    Thanks !!

  3. Estes rockets are available online from a number of places, such as:

    The Estes Blue Ninja and Eliminator are fun and easy. The Oracle video cam is also almost pre-built (no sound on the video recording though).

    And if you want to move up to the next level, I recommend the Aerotech kits (The G-Force is fun and big and flies great on a G40-4 single use motor. I also like the look of the Strong Arm).

    As for websites, there are many to consider:
