Spy shot by Enterprise Estonia during a pitch by my peeps at Nordic Green today.

Some random notes:

Google: our top 10 sites datacenters (>5MW) have an average PUE of 1.2 (for each watt of computation .2 watts are used for cooling and overhead)

EPRI: datacenters consumed 1.5% of electricity in 2005. Today it’s 3%. Telco central offices are becoming data centers.

DHI Group: 10% of world’s energy is used for pumping and treating water.

  1. interesting eye.

I showed a curve of total U.S. electrical use since 1900. Back then, the largest category of consumption (33% of U.S. electricity) was for transportation! EVs and streetcars.

  2. I’d like to see a lot more energy used to pump and treat water. In particular, if we had cheap near-unlimited fusion power, we could use desalination to provide clean disease-free water to everyone in the world, for drinking, cooking, and healthier crops. Oh, and slip-n-slides.
