I was working with my son on his rocket design tonight, grooving on the nomex-honeycomb fins and aluminum ogive boat tail…

Then I get this photo from across the bay, a budding arsenal of two-stage clusters that will break Mach 3.

  1. Holy cow, mach 3? MACH 3!? That’s crazy!

  2. Steve, we’re not going to wake up to a photo of you riding a larger version of one of these monstners into space, are we?

  3. that looks funny…to me.Fins seem small.
? stability while at 2 stages..??

Just casting my mind back a few years.

  4. I think Steve likely meant to say "Is supposed to break Mach 3", or "the plan is to break Mach 3".

Can we see pictures of your son’s rocket design? Sounds like fun!

  5. Dr. Dad: could happen… =)

Stability: should be fine, and we simulate extensively in advance. The upper stage will be supersonic at ignition, which is why it has much smaller fins. Here is the last RocketMaverick’s two-stage rocket launch and video. It corkscrewed a bit when the solid graphite nozzle fractured from the pressure.

Tamooj: Sure, here is his current RockSim, which we plan to test on Saturday.

Just noticed that it should go supersonic. If it survives that, he will mount 29mm motor tubes on each of the fin tips, and then it will launch on a cluster of four motors (Three G motors on the fins and a central 54mm Cesaroni)

The reduction coupler mid-frame is for a strap-on video cam. We use half of a plastic Easter egg as the nosecone on an Oregon Scientific cam.

  6. I once did a 3 stage jobbie…a real Magyver…!!

Sadly I lost sight of it after stage 2…,launched off a small island…
    Staging is tricky…
Nasa has it down pretty good.
I am really enjoying seeing this stuff…
Last one I built had an ? Aerotech ? motor..Drove to Syracuse NY to buy those..
    THAT went well…
Found 6 months later (no chute-one way flight only..)

Sadly I suspect crossing from USA back to Canada with a trunk full of those motors is tricky now…
    Have not tried.

PS I like your new car.

  7. Heh… 3-stagers often lead to crazy antics…
