Just discovered this digital time capsule of the early flickr format.

This screen shot comes from the June 28, 2004 Flickr (Ludicorp) executive summary, posted with permission from cofounder Caterina.

At that time, Flickr was approaching their first VC round of financing, but sold to Yahoo instead.

I joined in June โ€™04 as part of the due diligence process, to see what this community was all about, and well, gosh, it proved mighty addicting. Stuart wrote my first testimonial, and I bought my first digital camera, a 3MP Casio.

  2. Shoebox; damn, that was a while back.

  3. Well, I’m glad you got something out of it, acquisition or no ๐Ÿ™‚

  4. Six years!?! Say it isn’t so.

  5. Oh well, I see we keep on bringing awesome memories to the present, willingly or casually, no matter!

How beautiful that second semester of 2004 was, wasn’t it? Still so fresh in my mind. It was quite the set up of the basis of my future…

How many things changed since, tho, right? It was not the same Internet as of today. It was also the set up of the basis of the Internet we are experiencing today.

I am still thinking of revamping publicly (still working at orkut, can you believe that?!) Eclectic Thinkers community. I never forgot, I never abandoned it in my heart or in my mind. What a wonderful synergy we made there. If I only had some time for it. However I also think this is not the same time as that was, I have that present in mind. I;m not sure it would be the same. But, hey, maybe it’s another thing, rich as or richer than the first one!

Life… what a ride, uh? Cheers to that. ๐Ÿ˜€

  6. Wow… time flies, having fun or not! I just looked at my own ‘capsule’ and see I joined 3 months later but with a photo taken in June. – thanks Steve for introducing me to flickr and the fine people I met on that path.

    Eclectic thinkers… unite!

  7. Eppie… it’s just exactly as you describe it what I feel as the different time today compared to that time when the group flourished. Now, reading your words, and idea came to mind [mostly what you say already in a more concrete format]… it’s all about harnessing the power of the immediacy and fastness of the "new" Internet… to work in our favor for a group that requires a lot of time when getting involved…

The dynamics of the group should have to change into a more light format, without losing its "interestingness" and why not also with the chance to bring about new experimentation in the formation of new knowledge or just about the interactions between minds…

    Interesting. I will give it a thought…

  8. but would you have invested?! ๐Ÿ™‚

  9. Yeah, I was actively trying to talk them out of the Yahoo sale… to raise a little money and stay independent….

  10. Huh, the early format had notes.
