These are two of my favorite things…

The thick wires are actually small pipes with 200psi water cooling running through the center to remove resistive heat losses. Entwined physics bliss!

In the center is a Bose-Einstein condensate, a cloud of super-cooled Rubidium atoms in a laser trap…. Actually two stable isotopes of Rubidium (85,87) that differ in weight by two neutrons.

In a game of catch & release, the atoms will shoot up a 30 ft. tall atomic fountain in an experiment to measure the gravitational “constant” across the different masses and hopefully upset Einstein’s theory of general relativity… =)

  1. And then the rest of us will have to learn physics all over again!

  2. where does the wormhole open up?

  3. Sweet! I’ll have to show this one to my kids. They were just watching a NOVA show on the race to absolute zero, where they were introduced to this 5th state of matter.

  4. I like the trio of Variacs at the left. Sort of like seeing a pair of vice-grips in the hands of a brain surgeon.
