Found a cool beach today, hiking up and over some hills.

…with sea turtles mating in a prolonged splash-fest of fins.

And a stingray swam around my feet before darting off to roll in the clear waves. (short video)

And the beach is literally crawling with baby hermit crabs. (short video)

I wonder if the mama crabs collect starter homes for their babies?

  1. nice sunglare burnout on the stingray vid – and weird to see all those crabs… my first "pet" – *sigh*

  2. glad to see this wasn’t taken by the 5D Mark II!

  3. perfect shot! Love the motion!

  4. thanks y’all.

biotron: I had a pet hermit crab too. Name was "racehorse"
He loved to eat minced meat with sour cream and potato.

  5. I want to thank you very deeply for letting me use one of your rocket photo. I will probably make a much better "montage" an other day but I am quite happy with this one. Feel free to do what you want with it if ever…. You may see it here.

  6. Racehorse!! 🙂 – brilliant!

mine was called "Herbie", came from this beach, and appeared to love eating bacon rind, turnip and wood lice (i was not providing some kind of Mexican pastiche like you * – i was going for sensibly metered food groups) – until such time as he appeared one morning completely naked, floating upside-down at the surface, having abandoned his shell. the sight caused me much grief and guilt.

disclaimer: i was 7 years old and hellbent on "finding interesting things", particularly from local rockpools. my ongoing Decapod Crustacean Owners Anonymous group is really very helpful – i’d be happy to take you along if you are ever over this way…

  7. hermit crabs with transparent shells for educational purposes here!

  8. Oh, I love that!!!! I wonder if other hermit crabs freak upon seeing the bold nakedness
