People asked me lots of questions while I was snorkeling with the colorful Canon D10… and while taking video shooting down the water slide…

But I did not know until I got back to the room how it would perform. Waterproof cams often get a bad rap for photo quality above water – making every photo look like it was taken in a dirty aquarium – and my last Optio WP had a real tough time auto-focusing.

When I get a new camera, the first shot seems to set my enthusiasm gauge. There has been no post-processing of this hand-held first photo.

Check out the macro detail at full size (sample detail below).

  2. Macro pictures with Canon compact cameras are awesome! I love the wing detail texture.

  3. damnit! now I want one 🙂

  4. Very delicious details.

  5. Awesome and impressive, really.

I was talking about monarch butterflies the other day in Iguazú, Misiones (I’ve been to the falls again, where’s full of butterflies and moths, i feel like home there… 😉

    How beautiful she is!

Seen on your photo stream. (?)

  7. Beautiful capture.
    Have a nice weekend 😀

  8. Looks great…tempting me to get a waterproof camera too, though still torn between that and an enclosure for my new Canon S90 (which I love so far).

I swore off waterproof cameras a few years ago after having a Pentax Optio WP20, which was sluggish and mediocre outside of the water. I’m glad to see that they’re getting better. I wish more electronics were waterproof!

  9. Yeah, the S90 is a righteous camera. f/2 and cool ergonomics to boot. Looks like the waterproof case costs about $200….. would you trust it? =)

gi^2 – will have to visit that Misiones some day…

  10. I’m indeed scared of my S90 facing an untimely demise. I’d hate to imagine its nifty f/2 lens full of saltwater. 🙂

Gi & Steve: Among the many reasons to visit Misiones, Iguazú does have amazing butterflies! My favorite is the "88" (Diaethria clymena):

  11. @Complexify My friend and I use a Canon G11 with a waterproof case. It’s been great until now, you can see some pictures here http://www.flickr.com/photos/ignacioizquierdo/sets/7215762334058.... The only problem is that sometimes drops of water condesate between layers in the waterproof case. I think it is still a good low cost solution to get started in underwater photography.

  12. @kirainet Thanks for the advice and the beautiful photos from Flores. If I do end up getting a waterproof case for the S90, I’ll let you know how it works out.
