On the sea bluff of HMB last night.

Something primitive about a drum circle around the fire… with participants from Russia, Brazil, Turkey, China, Korea, Vietnam, Israel and Saudi Arabia. Got the sense this may have been the first time some of them had roasted marshmallows in the fire.

The blue-green flames persisted for quite a while when the fire was quite hot. There was only wood on the fire (no artificial logs). I was wondering if the color might be coming from copper salts. This copper fire kettle has been exposed to the sea air for about a year since its last use. Perhaps the salty air built up some CuCl that then became free metal ions in the flame, giving off a precise line spectrum. Just like we do with colored rocket propellants!

  1. very pretty fire …. did you enjoy yesterday’s negative tide?

  2. Your son should have slipped an extra grain into the pit when no one was looking! Or maybe a few of those ‘special’ Sobee bombs from this fall!

  3. Nice contrast between the warm colours and the dark background.
If it were a copper salt it would probably be CuCl2 instead of CuCl, says the chemist in me, but they would both burn green anyway.

  4. Both CuCl and CuCl2 are possible, but Cu(II) is a probably more common form of copper than Cu(I).
