  1. It looks so close!

Seen on my Flickr home page. ( ?² )

  2. I am at Vandenberg AFB, with the flight director and base Col.

The upper stage excess momentum will be "discarded" by shooting it into the sun.

  3. "by shooting it into the sun"……Sweet.
I’ll look at the sun for impact =P

  4. Nice to see the launch was a success.

shooting it into the sun … Cool.
But if they have an engine that can muster the 18.6 mi/sec delta-V to pull that off, why do they need a upper first! stage? 🙂

Did they just throw the garbage into solar orbit instead?

  5. To heliocentric orbit, and beyond! (quoting Buzz Lightyear)

There was 10K lbs of unused lift capacity on today’s launch. The Centaur upper stage had a lot of excess momentum to burn off (according to the flight director).

Nobody has figured out single stage to orbit (that I know of… but I did hear a pitch for an end-burner with nano-aluminum that thought they could do it)

  6. wow awesome shot!

Seen on my Flickr home page. (?)

  7. my first shoot of the Moon, trying to emulate you but still a lot to improve!

  8. by the way, just noticed that both of our Moon pictures were taken on the same day, October 3, 2009 (But from different places 🙂 ) I can only find some very subtle differences in orientation.
