On the prowl…

Often heard, but seldom seen. Although I once saw them finishing off a deer up the hill from this spot.

Infrared night photo by the robo-cam.

So tonight I set up the other critter cam in the bedroom. Should provide a sleep log with the time of movements and room temp.

  1. This deer posed for the camera just before and after the coyotes passed through…

  2. Critter cam in the bedroom? There’s a bad joke in there somewhere. 😉

  3. What I wonder about is, how do they know to follow the trails…

Haha this is a great experiment to do.
If this is your first time, you ll love to see your unconsciouself, moving all night long…wondering… who’ s that guy ?!? =)

I did it with a webcam, the light on, in the room, few years back, but lost the recording on a broken hard drive. Will have to do it again !!!

Let us know how it goes ; )

  5. We recently observed 2 coyotes attack and kill a small deer in our backyard. Without our deer fence, our pets would be long gone. Did you have to ‘bait’ the area in front of the camera to attract animals?

  6. A few years ago (OK, maybe 10) The Cats’ House people had a hilarious overhead time lapse movie of them sleeping with 5-13 cats coming and going throughout the night, but it seems to have been removed from their site.

  7. mmoody_js: no food bait. I just tried to figure which trails and watering holes they would frequent.

I did scatter some Calvin Klein Obsession to attract cougars (seriously – the conservation folks say that this works for the big cats)… but alas, this is what I got…

Venettaj: Yeah, the deer pose for the camera at night. This one did some chewing up close.

  8. I thought cougars were night animals?…odd coincidence, just today I saw for the first time in 10 years in our Alamo backyard what appears to be a bobcat (also in the middle of the day)

  9. I caught a coyote in my headlights last summer, in front of my house…right in the middle of Dallas. Two summers ago, there was a red fox sitting in a neighbor’s yard at about 4 in the afternoon. Animal control said they could be there "within 30 days".

  10. Coyotes have adapted well to urban areas. I.e. Chicago. Here in San Diego, they’re everywhere, and can be seen in daylight throughout and near all the "urban canyons" we have. An outdoor kitty is soon a missing kitty.
