An extended quail family dropped by for a drink at the pond… followed by cats and ‘coons at night.

First shots, used to adjust the angle of the camera-droid.

  1. Awww, little baby ones, too. Very cute. I love these birds.

  2. I love their elaborate signaling networks with sentries positioning at the high points. When a hawk swoops overhead, a special chirp makes them all go completely silent in sync.

At night, the coons are frequent customers… Seem to need water more often than the cats:

  3. Yeah… that heat must be tough on the raccoons and all of the critters. Raccoons frequented my backyard duck ponds until I encased them in an aviary after an unfortunate daytime attack. I once had a conversation with a quail (and/or I’m anthropomorphizing). He was on the rooftop and I told him to come on down, check things out… maybe think about building a nest in the window well.

Right after that he came down, checked things out, and walked over to the window well. I asked him to do it again on camera but he refused.

P.S. My ducks went silent as two balloons drifted overhead on Sunday. Scary, scary balloon predators.

  4. The raccoons can be cute, especially the little ones, but they can also cause a lot of trouble. They killed off 25 of my chickens and guineas last March. I even had two of them stand me down at my own front door this past spring. I heard noise on the front porch during the early morning hours. I opened the door. Two young ones stood looking at me. One tried to walk right in. If you have fish in the pond, they may become tasty treats.

  5. Excellent fishers they are. The buggers got most of my fish last year:

And this morning I found my skimmer filter disassembled and strewn on the lawn.

  6. Smart little buggers. They want the pool to revert to an algae pond.

Dr Dad: I think that’s part of the attraction. The goldfish seem to be breeding fast enough, and luckily, the pond is deep.

My suggestion for both of you is to train the feral cats to fight back and defend your turf

With a little training and confidence building, retractable claws should rule the roost.

  7. Surprisingly I discovered the Camera-droid on a walk this morning. Was thnking about mooning it but my wife and common sense got the better of me! Might suggest you also try placing it at the dead tree in the grass area up the hill from where it is now. I’ve seen Coyotes and Bobcats there frequently. They feed on mice in the longer grass.

  8. Hahaha, ginger cat for the win!
