My old seargeant major would like a word with you. "After lighting the fuse, …WALK! don’t bloody run!". His reasoning was that running is unsafe (more likelihood of a trip and fall) and betrays a lack of confidence in fuse-length calculations. Way more cool to stroll away, hands in pockets, with an insouciant smile hovering over one’s lips.
However, I taught him a lesson when I pulled the pin during grenade practice. I swung my arm back preparatory to lobbing, and smashed my knuckles on the concrete parapet behind me – dropped the dang thing in the trench with us. We both ran, and he lost his cool completely. (Very sensitive chap)
