Fantastic!
Hopefully you know about Cris Benton.
(a sample: http://www.flickr.com/photos/kap_cris/40228621 )I think you got a bit higher.

I recognize this from looking many times at the area in Google Earth! What humans can do to our planet Earth!

Thanks for posting the link to this outstanding shot on my salt pond photo!

Is yours of Bayfront Park in Menlo Park (like mine), or a different area? I’ve never seen the yellowish color at Bayfront.
I’ve been dying to go for a ride on the AV Zeppelin but can’t really fit it into the budget. I’m glad you got to go. You got many outstanding images…..thanks so much for sharing them.
Can you describe your shooting technique while aboard? Was this taken while leaning out the window, or through glass or plastic?
Fantastic job, really!

thanks. I think this was through plastic, the parabolic tilted rear window that wraps around the love seat. I think the window’s ~45° angle to the ground helps reduce reflections. The cabin is also in the large shadow of the airbag overhead. I was using a 100-400mm lens.
Some of the shots were leaning out the window, and that is even better, but it restricts the compositional flexibility, and it fully challenges the image stabilization gyros in the lens!
I was so focused on the ground elements that I had to go back to the photo sequence to figure out where this was: looks like it was just North of Dumbarton Bridge, but on the East Bay side.

Thanks for the info. It sounds very cool in there, a ride in the Zeppelin is now going to have to move higher on my wish list. You should get a commission if I go!
Thanks for figuring out where the shot was taken. I didn’t think it was Bayfront Park. Unfortunately, most of the salt pond areas in the East Bay are off limits to kites due to federal and state wildlife regulations designed to protect nesting birds. They do allow kite flying during some periods under permit, but it’s almost impossible to get a permit. I hoping to tag along on a colleague’s permit in the coming months.
Your shutter speed of 1/800th or even lower would make image stabilization unnecessary. I’ve gotten tack sharp shots at 1/800th even with my kite dancing around a bit.
I was tickled to have recently gotten a sharp kite photo at 1/25th. I was using a Canon XSi with its image stabilized kit lens. The kite was not dancing at all for this shot!
You seem like a likely candidate for kite aerial photography, albeit not with your 5D. Feel free to contact me if you’d like to see how it works sometime.

You are probably right as I have been doing rocket videography so far…. and thanks for the offer…
