    Strong winds will do that to you. Protecting your eyes would be a good idea

    Your B-17 was probably flying at around 120 knots. The rightmost picture below, taken in a US Navy wind tunnel, shows what would happen at 265 knots, which is approximately the maximum design speed of a B-17.
