Erik took us on a magic bus ride.

Here’s a short video of the view from this front cupola as we buzz the tower at NASA Ames.

A series of photos from our adventure follow in this flickr stream. (Taking handheld HDR sequences during the vibration of flight was a fun experiment.)

  1. Wow! Amazing treatment and video!

  2. Steve, Thanks for the interesting views! Hard to imagnine thousands of those filling the skies.

  3. Wow, what a view to enjoy while flying..

  4. How fun, Steve… my dad (90 yrs old) used to fly the B-17 and B-25 …. I’ve always wanted to fly in one. They had one seat left for today…. so, yeehaw! I’m still waiting to fly in a C-47, too (Berlin Airlift)

  5. Great experience (but you have a lot of those) and wonderful plane. I’m glad it’s still flying.

  6. wow, aside from the content – what a range of tones too! great shot!

  7. Can you imagine sitting in that nose, staring at a sky full of Messerschmitts?

  8. Simple awesome day. Great photos, Steve. Loving ’em =)

  9. i dont believe it. im on the ground at the sunnyvale golf course below you. i think i saw you coming in. what a coincidence.!

  10. even if it is hand held the result is just awesome. The machine guns texture looks like from outer space.

  11. Your B-17 pictures and video are breathtaking, much like the ride I’m sure.

  12. Shiny details, I’ll give you that.

  13. Nice work on the HDR! These planes from that era are true trasures! My Dad flew the C-47 in the Berlin Airlift. Like the angle on the ground shot, too.

  14. Great shot!

Thanks for the peek at what most people will never see.

  15. wonderful perspective.

  16. MY GOD what a fantastic photo! Well done! And what a ride that would be!!!

  17. Really great photos. Surprised no one has mentioned that
scene from Heavy Metal with the rotoscoped B-17s.

You can see that on YouTube here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rWh4Ux_Vlq4
The scene shows all the different sections on the plane detailed in these photos. I have to admit I had that Don Felder tune (Takin’ a Ride) running in my head while looking at Steve’s pics.

Of course there’s also that great episode of South Park that was
    an homage to Heavy Metal.
See the South Park B-17 clip here. Full episode here.

Err… FYI, the Heavy Metal clip is a bit violent and South Park is likely NSFW.

  18. Not bad for an HDR shot with movement! Great, in fact!
