I was standing through the open-air sunroof (aka 50 cal gun bay), looking forward. My lens hood was like an air scoop thrusting me back, almost off my feet a couple times, as I tried to anchor the camera base on the airframe. I could not open my eyes from the wind. So I took a blind shot. I had no idea what was in the frame or that my friend Erik was in the forward gun turret at the time. Sweet surprise.

  1. The things you do for your craft.

  2. Did any of you crawl into the belly turret?-)

  3. pegleg – no, but it was tempting… You can to get in from the outside, so once airborne, there is no way to get in and out of the bubble below.

  4. Great shot, especially large. Looks like an image you friend should hang up somewhere for all to see.

  5. The original Sperry Ball Turrets could be rotated such that the hatch was accessible from inside the aircraft – they weren’t manned during takeoff and landing (normally). Still they were extremely cramped and the gunner (who had to be very trim) could sometimes be in it for up to 10 hrs. Difficult to imagine the courage of some of the Greatest Generation.

  6. Looking the other way… Windswept
