A Boy Scout troop with matching red shirts march out to retrieve their Estes rockets as the Honest John rocket rumbles off.

(I lent a hand in the final assembly back at the launch line; it has several flawless flights to its credit)

  1. I like the people in the foreground on this one.

  2. thanks…. I am increasingly enamored with foreground elements for scale. Will look for more of those.

P.S. There was no crop off the top of this photo.. Barely kept it in frame…

  3. Great shot Steve. How far away from the rails were the Scouts? I’m assuming it was a sufficiently safe distance but am wondering how much the lens is compressing the DOF.

  4. Looking at the photo again, they were nowhere as close as it seems. It is perspective compression at 340mm. The rocket is about 2x their height… but I don’t know the distance as I was at an oblique angle to the flight line.

Oh, and here is a video of the flight line, taken by RC helicopter.
