Airship Ventures had the hardest time getting the mast truck into the country. The Zeppelin was easy in comparison. There was no precedent for this truck, and after a regulatory run around, they discovered that the chassis was refurbished and qualified as an antique. That allowed them to bypass all the red tape, and the truck was allowed to drive out to dock with the Zeppelin nose for landing.

We used this truck on our return as the more modern MAN truck was stuck in traffic and we beat it back from Monterey.

Its shape made some people suspect that it could be used as a mobile erector and launch pad for a medium-range guided missile.

Actually, an in-depth examination revealed that this German contraption was only fit to launch a V2. Since all the remaining stock of the flight-capable V2’s had already been fired and destroyed decades ago at the White Sands Missile Range, this vehicle was assessed as being a piece of antiquated, innocuous technology.

  2. Mast trucks for Zepellins, quite the odd niche!
