Esther Dyson organized a fun jaunt on the Zeppelin NT, operated by Airship Ventures.

You can see Stanford Stadium on the left and the Paly High stadium under Esther’s knee.

It has a fly-by-wire joystick that is quite easy and intuitive to use, once you get used to the lumbering delay in responsiveness from steering a huge airship.

  1. the coolest pic, i see this fly over frequently..

  2. Taken with the Mark II no less…Great!

  3. Cool glass cockpit.

I wonder does it leak any helium adding to the flight cost, or is it 100% leak-proof?

The Lycoming 360 engines are nice puppies, used in most small planes like Cessnas and Pipers, as well as Robinson and Schweizer helicopters among many others. Good to see another good use for them, pushing this massive thing around.

  4. whoa!

would love to ride on one of these

    is it noisy?

  5. jonrawlinson: it is very quiet, a big advantage of zeppelins over blimps. With a rigid airframe, the engines can be located farther away from the passenger cabin, (vs. the vibration and noise proximity of being connected to the cabin)

JKaljundi: some slow leaking I presume. They had recently "filtered" the helium, so we had more lift than usual, which we needed for a flight in the rain.

  6. Awesome picture. That looks like so much fun!

  7. Wow this photo makes me sick ha ha ha. What a view.

  8. Superb shot! I envy you!

  9. I would love to fly one, can you rent these or is there a specific flight school for blimps(zeppelins)?

  10. Excellent image, Well done.
