With Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, at the wheel.

The handling is unlike anything I have felt, given the low center of gravity (batteries and motor are below the wheel line).

Photo by Sam Perry (aka “Mr. Man” by Oprah).

I took video of the whole ride; will post that and better photos when I can, which won’t be soon as I just arrived in San Diego.

Update: Here’s the video and commentary

Intriguing. The geometry and relative movement of a car’s suspension arms create an instantaneous axis of rotation that is quasi parallel to the car’s longitudinal axis โ€” the "roll" axis.

When the center of gravity is located above the roll axis โ€” which is almost always the case with a road-going car, โ€” the centrifugal force in a curve tends to tilt the car outwards.

With speedboats, however, the center of gravity is often below the roll axis. In curves, the centrifugal force will pull the center of gravity outwards, which means that the boat’s cabin will tilt inwards.

It would be interesting to watch a Tesla S negotiating a curve at high speed, to see in which direction it tilts…

  6. Lovely car. Looking forward to driving one.

  8. It looks gorgeous. Much more elegant/Maserati looking than the roadster with its Lotus look. And it’s a family car! I love it, would like to test drive one. 2011 is a long way out, though.

  9. you my friend are The Man. freak this is cool.

  10. batteries and motor are below the wheel line

    Neat!
