This 3D smackdown opens in theaters next weekend. Seth Rogen has found his alter-ego in B.O.B., a one-eyed gelatinous blob. By far the funniest animated character I’ve seen.

Another treat for the Bay Area crowd – the DreamWorks animators did not voyage far from home for the setting. You can see the robo-action tear along 101 near Candlestick, through the financial district, and then for a tangle on the Golden Gate Bridge.

But the highlight for me was Ginormica, the “monster name” for Susan. She is bigger and stronger – albeit less limber – than my former hearththrob from the renderfarm, Elastigirl. She really brings the B-52’s Planet Claire to life in the closing credits.

And 50’s B horror film buffs will find many allusions, from Mothra to The Blob, and a couple examples below:

  1. Ginormica is 1" shy of 50 ft…

  2. The Creature From the Black Lagoon….I must have seen that one 50 times! The new Monsters vs. Aliens looks like a lot of fun!

  3. Hey this is cool to see.

I’m an artist on the MVA. I did the textures and surfacing on Dr Cockroach.

  4. The giant Susan will be quickly deconstructed as a Freudian slip that provides a glimpse into the dark and conflicted yearnings of the nerds populating the West coast movie and CG studios: deep down, these nerds fear that the Marilyn-esque blonde cutie they’re all dreaming of meeting some day will, once they commit to a serious relationship with her, morph into a domineering creature against whom the carpe diem, rational mindset of sandal-wearing dudes will be powerless (^^:

  5. In IMAX 3D no less…

  6. Ginormica… a great name to have if you are an alien, and such one…

  7. Excellent film… you must see it in 3D. I suppose I’m biased, though.
